if the number of flowers on these blackthorn bushes is anything to go by, 2012 is going to be a bumper sloe season! looking forward to returning to this spot on butser hill in six months to get picking and brewing…
due to an excess of sloe gin after our prolific picking session on the south downs back in october we thought we thought perhaps we ought to share some and give it to people as little birthday pressies. the wooden heart serves a double function as it is the recipient’s birthday and also reminds them what vintage the brew is.
love, love, love these little bottle stoppers! they will be perfect for preventing the husband from polishing off all the sloe gin once it’s ready to drink…

the husband and i had a fabulous weekend in hampshire picking sloes to replenish stocks. we have now returned to tootingshire with five litres of sloe gin and a glow in our cheeks after a healthy dose of sunshine, walking, cows and of course the gorgeous doggies. kibo was certainly the most enthusiastic sloe picker, but sadly he’s not into sharing so wasn’t able to contribute to the gin making effort!
this time last year a certain little wedding provided the perfect opportunity to tuck into my mother’s amazing sloe gin. we decorated the bottles (with a very apt disclaimer) and put one on each table. needless to say it lasted a matter of minutes and certainly got the party going. we will be off sloe picking in a couple of weeks to replenish stocks!
